Whether on a front porch, in a neighborhood park, at a major attraction, or around Monument Circle, all of the stories we consume occur in a place. More than just interesting things to photograph, they serve as the stage for the experiences that give life meaning. The places we build can enhance the experience and understanding of the story or detract from and commoditize them. Winston Churchill observed that “we shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us,” reminding us that the way in which we build our places not only has a lasting impact on how we share stories—they actually enable our ability to create new stories. As an example, Monument Circle’s unspoken ability to bring our community together in times of celebration and in times of angst is as important as its ability to tell the story of freedom and sacrifice through its engravings and sculptures.
