Anchor destinations are the places of outsized importance to our community. This certainly includes regionally significant attractions that attract significant visitor attendance. These attractions add tremendous vibrancy and cultural value to residents, but are of a scale that they can only be sustained with the support of visitors as well. We must continue to support the health of these destinations while also better understanding how their programming can be better coordinated to maximize both individual and collective success and minimize market cannibalization. We must also understand that while we may identify anchors based on their outsized importance, when it comes to individual communities and populations, other attractions and amenities are likely to hold the same types of value to them.
