2D: Develop Indy-Owned or Indy-Based Events
In line with the European model of city-based annual conferences, Indy can incubate its own thought-leader conferences and events revolving around core business strengths and economic development strategies such as agriculture, food, bio, life sciences, pharma, culture, sports, logistics, and technology. Furthermore, our social strengths that allow us to work together, welcome strangers, and believe in causes bigger than ourselves are qualities that can be harnessed and shared to address challenges in our society like extremism, hate, and inequity. Also, as events, particularly trade shows, become commoditized and acquired by third-party, for-profit companies, Indy should consider ownership interests in key annual events to mitigate risk of losing them to other cities.
Value to the Community
By showcasing Indy's talent and competitiveness to other industry thought leaders, the city claims it’s stake as a trailblazer within that industry while also building a stronger local economy. The annual attendance offered by the events Indy controls also minimizes the risk of losing significant economic impact through jobs, visitor spending, and visitor taxes.Value to the Hospitality Industry
Annual events that Indy can count on are critical to sustaining the tourism investments we have made. Rather than bidding each year against competitors, signature events that we own (the European model), that we relocate here (our Music Crossroads initiative), or that we hold ownership stakes in provide a baseline of guaranteed visitors. It also directly supports regional economic development strategies by bringing thought leaders in targeted industries to Indy every year, increasing Indy's profile, and generating business travel.Updates
