9D: Visually Intuitive Navigation and Wayfinding
Develop a local and regional wayfinding program that uses visual cues to help people orient themselves without the need for standard signage. Such visual cues can include gateway sculptures, signature buildings, unique landscaping, public art, street lighting, streetscape elements like banners, and even infrastructure design and color palletes. These cues help us understand where we are on a subconscious level in ways that beautify an area, rather than distract from it.
Value to the Community
Like other placemaking efforts, distinguishing places with beautifying elements that reflect communities canalso promote resident pride. Such elements communicate a sense of arrival that signifies a place of importance or difference, helping residents have a feeling of significance of their role in the broader community.Value to the Hospitality Industry
Visually intuitive wayfinding helps visitors better navigate the city in ways that add value and interest to their experience. Rather than simply following a map or reading a sign, these elements beautify an area and communicates something about what makes it special, improving the visitor experience and promoting positive impressions.Updates
