8:Waterways

The White River and its tributaries are the pre-eminent natural feature in Central Indiana, otherwise dominated by relatively flat terrain and agricultural fields. They provide much of the region’s drinking water supply and connect countless neighborhoods, town centers, and attractions together. They are a source of recreation, connect many of our regional parks and open spaces, and provide critical wildlife habitat. The natural beauty of water provides timeless appeal and a rare opportunity for natural connection within the region. They are also likely to bear the brunt of projected climate change impacts, threatening the benefits and opportunities they afford us.
